Impact Broadway would like to recognize

Tyronickah Buckmire, 3rd place winner of the 2011 August Wilson Monologue Competition

Tyronickah placed in the New York finals on April 12th and advances to the National Finals on May 9th at the August Wilson Theatre. She is a junior at Brooklyn Theatre Arts High School. The monologue she did was from Act 2, Scene 4 of King Hedley II. The story is at the point where one main character, Elmore, is putting continuous pressure on Ruby, Kings mother, to tell King about what really happened and about who Leroy Slater is. Finally and with much hesitation she gives in, giving King a vivid almost completely detailed account of what happened when the police came to her and asked her to identify a body with almost no face. The Gruesome recollection of this horrid memory sends Ruby into a seemingly disturbed state as she recalls to her Fiancée and her almost thirty something year old son.

COME AND SUPPORT YOUR FELLOW IMPACT BROADWAY MEMBER at the National Finals at the August Wilson Theatre on Broadway on Monday May 9th. Details will follow.

Impact Broadway also takes this time to recognize
Brooklyn Theatre Arts High School student

Jared Findlay, 2010 Winner of the August Wilson Monologue Competition

“The Start of Dreams”, produced by Jennifer Gordon and directed by The Horne Brothers. “The Start of Dreams” is the story of award-winning director Kenny Leon bringing aspiring teenage actors to a Broadway stage in his annual August Wilson Monologue competition. In a new age where Arts Education is considered expendable in such a declining economy, Leon is determined to use his celebrity and influence to expose kids across the country to the wonderful world of theatre. Featuring A-list actors like Denzel Washington, Samuel L. Jackson and Phylicia Rashad, “The Start of Dreams” is packed with Hollywood’s elite weighing in on this important art form and what it means to humanity.

About the August Wilson Monologue Competition
August Wilson’s Century Cycle is an achievement in American theatre. Each of the ten plays are set in a different decade of the twentieth century. At the core of each work are soaring, lyrical monologues that take the song, laughter, pain, and rich content of African American life and place it in the mouths of a great and varied ensemble of characters.

The competition is open to sophomores, juniors and seniors from participating cities. The winners at the regional level will travel to the August Wilson Theatre on Broadway to participate in a weekend devoted to Wilson and the final round of the competition.

Students will perform a one to two minute monologue from any of the plays in August Wilson’s Century Cycle. The panel of judges will be comprised of theatre professionals from the respective communities.

The winner will receive a $500 scholarship, runner-up a $250 scholarship and a $100 scholarship for honorable mention. All finalists will receive a hardbound book of August Wilson’s plays.

Hello, my name is Katrina Mackey and I’m a senior at McKinney Highschool of the Arts in Brooklyn New York. I got involved with Impact Broadway in my junior year when Ms. Donna came to our school with several of her colleagues and introduced the concept. In short they explained to me and other founding members that the youth and minority community arent exposed to all Broadway has to offer. They conveyed many messages but the one that stuck with me was that the arts should be appreciated by people of all types because not only is it entertaining but the people who help make Broadway shows possible care about what we the youth think. Once upon a time the intellect of minorities was a joke and today sometimes the genius of our youth is over looked. They write us off as playful thrill seekers without a passion for the writing, dancing, music and drama that make Broadway sparkle. Impact Broadway challenges the youth while giving us a platform to stand up and speak out so that this classic tradition of theatre can live on and prosper. Its because of Impact Broadway that I’ve gotten to speak to actors about what it’s like to make it, see “In the Heights” and appreciate a world right in my home, I never knew existed. As an aspiring actress I’ve been very small minded about what a performance can do for people because although I love the stage I’m also hungry for fame. Impact Broadway’s programs shut me up and made me appreciate even more the field of fine arts, and a gift like this one is priceless.

Eternally thankful,
Katrina Mackey, McKinney Highschool 2010
Founding Member of the McKinney Highschool Impact Broadway Theater Club

Harlem will be on fire as it opens its doors to the show that made Jennifer Hudson, a household name! No, I am not talking about American Idol. I am talking about Dreamgirls. A sensational new stage production of DREAMGIRLS, it is set to come into our own backyard, the legendary Apollo Theater on November 7! Full of onstage joy and backstage drama, DREAMGIRLS tells the rags-to riches story of an up and coming 1960’s girls group, and the triumphs and tribulations that come with fame and fortune. Dreamgirls is a major highlight of the Apollo Theater’s 75th Anniversary and is directed and choreographed by Robert Longbottom with co-choreography by Shane Sparks (yes from Randy Jackson’s American Best Dance Crew on MTV!) and is produced by John Breglio for Vienna Waits Productions. Dreamgirls will introduce Moya Angela as Effie White and feature, as The Dreams, Syesha Mercado as Deena Jones, and Adrienne Warren as Lorrell Robinson.

And for added value if you are a resident of Harlem you can get special uptown love! On Friday, Nov. 6 – 8 PM, Saturday, Nov. 7 – 2 PM, Sunday, November 15 – 3 PM, and Wednesday, Nov. 25 – 8 PM community performances will be available during the run of Dreamgirls only for Harlem residents or those who work in the Harlem community. Harlem residents can purchase up to 6 tickets and those who work in Harlem can purchase up to 2 tickets. All must present I.D. Tickets for these performances are half price and must be purchased at the Apollo Box office.

On Thursday, November 19th at the Dwyer Community Center at 10:30am, there will be a production that will engage students in a very intriguing way. It is called “Theater Connections: Two Towns of Jasper”. Theater Connections is a Community Works series featuring a dazzling array of multicultural theater, dance, music and special events for students and special groups. On June 7, 1988, in Jasper, Texas, a black man was chained to a pickup truck and dragged to his death by three white men. Two film crews, one black and one white, recorded the reactions of the town’s citizens in what came to be this incredible expose on race, experience and perspective. Followed by an interactive discussion. In depth study guide available. Grades 6-12. Call to RSVP: 212-459-1854 or email: performances@communityworksnyc.org

Career alert! Impact Broadway’s host campus, CCNY will be hosting a free seminar on career panel on 11/5 at 1pm focuses on PR and Publicity. RSVP with David Thompson at dwthompson@ccny.cuny.edu for more info please visit, http://www1.ccny.cuny.edu/prospective/humanities/events.cfm

Thoughts of the arts in Manhattan immediately conjure images of the great museums and, of course, the bright lights of Broadway. But the island of Manhattan is alive with electricity during the summer from downtown’s Battery Park to Harlem and beyond — and you have the opportunity to be charged by its wattage!

For instance, you may have heard about the revival of the Tony award winning musical, The Wiz at City Center (it closes July 5th, so you can still make it), starring Grammy award winning Ashanti… but did you know that The Harlem Repertory Theatre will also present an interpretation of this musical theater classic this year? Performances take place at Harlem’s Aaron Davis Hall every Friday and Saturday from July 24th to September 5th!

Also, not only does the world famous Apollo Theater present its legendary Amateur Night every Wednesday, it has also introduced NEXT, at The Apollo Pass, a great program that lets you purchase a pair of tickets to any show for $7.50 once you’ve paid the same amount for the membership pass. NEXT specially priced tickets are on a first come first serve basis through June 2010.

Harlem Week and Jazzmobile, two Harlem institutions, offer entertainment and social engagement – and shopping! On the theater tip, the 2009 New York International Fringe Festival will present Scandalous People – A Sizzling Jazzical!written by African American playwright and Brooklyn resident, Myra Churchill. Oh, and if you want to to the family spiritual thing, there is the amazing new spot, Gospel Uptown featuring great music and food.

Other NYC FREE summer staples include SummerStage, the premier concert series in Central Park, and Shakepeare in the Park the always amazing and multi-cultural offering of British playwright. Also notable on the city concert calendar is a CityParks concerts presentation of the Dominican sound on August 18th when the bachata groupXtremepays a visit to Washington Heights’ Highbridge Park.
