THE MISSION OF FORDHAM  High School for the Arts

Fordham High School for the Arts (Iris Blige, Principal) believes that the arts further students’ development as well-rounded individuals who express themselves through creativity, discipline, skill and teamwork.

A SNAPSHOT OF FORDHAM ARTS

Fordham Arts is a new NYC small public school serving 419 students (grades 9-12) with an interest in the arts.  Each Fordham Arts student chooses one of five arts majors-Instrumental Music, Vocal Music, Drama Dance and/or Visual Arts and studies that art form for four years in addition to completing a rigorous academic, Regents Based curriculum.

Fordham Arts has been the lucky recipient of some significant honors in the past year:

  • Eight Fordham drama majors graduated with Chancellor’s Endorsed Diplomas in Theatre.
  • Sophomore Tanai Pirela’s play THE BABY PROJECT was featured on Broadway in Fidelity Future Stage’s Finals featuring four Fordham Arts seniors.
  • Twelve vocal majors participated in the Weill Music Institute’s Bernstein Mass at Carnegie Hall directed by Marin Alsop in 2008 and are participating in the Gospel Messiah Project in 2010.
  • Fordham Arts received a Level Three (Silver) Rating in Major Organization Level and ten Fordham Arts vocal students received Excellent Ratings in Solo and Small Ensemble from New York State School Musical Association (NYSSMA).
  • Visual Arts student Juyaveel Wright’s artwork was chosen as the t-shirt and program image for New York Student Shakespeare Festival.
  • Fordham Arts was a recipient of a Lowe’s Toolbox for Education Grant to create a Living Museum in Fordham Arts’ hallways; an Impact Broadway grant to take 30 students to three Broadway shows this year; a recipient of a TDF Stage Doors residency and a recipient of The Center for Arts Education “Careers in the Arts” internship program.
  • Fordham Arts has been an arts partner with Vital Theatre Company for five years. This partnership has been made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts funding.
